Fourth and fifth grade gifted students traveled to Cecil Intermediate School today for a STEM Challenge Day. The first task was: Which group can design the most efficient assembly line? First, students drew pictures of cars on their assembly line. After some time for reflection and refining their processes, the students moved on to the task of creating color blocks on the assembly line. The next task was to work collaboratively to solve Fermi Math problems. Fermi Math problems require students to use critical thinking, creative problem solving, math skills, and perseverance to solve creative and challenging problems! The final activity required students to work in teams to create a personal flotation device for a can of soup. Students used materials like cups, straws, balloons, foil, tape, and cardboard to create the flotation devices.

We were very excited to host the 2019 Primary Literature Festival for gifted students in grades 2 and 3! We hosted students from Avella, Canon-Mac, Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry, McGuffey, and Washington at the event this year! Students earned points by completing challenges at five stations:
A special thanks to the middle school students who volunteered to help with the event! Students read All About Stephen Hawking and George's Secret Key to the Universe, by Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy. We donated money to the ALS Association in honor of Stephen Hawking.
Sienna Heasley created an animation project for the PA Media & Design Fair. Her project was created through the use of a Huion Drawing Tablet. Her animation, entitled “Together,” shares a powerful message of including others and kindness.
Her project included 2,700 frames! Sienna invested over 50 hours in this project! Congratulations to Sienna for coming in 1st place! She will advance on to the state competition at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in May. For more information on the PA Media & Design Competition, visit their website. The 4th-7th grade gifted students have been hard at work on the K’Nex STEM Design Challenge. They were challenged to create something out of K’Nex that could pick something up, move it, and put it back down. Students then had to design blueprints, disassemble their project, and prepare a presentation. Today, we traveled to California University of PA for the regional competition. Congratulations to two of our Middle School Teams: Andy, Genny, and Morgan came in 2nd place and Lexie, Milena, and Rebekah came in 1st place and will advance to the state competition in Harrisburg in May! |
