The fourth and fifth grade gifted students read The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett this year. As an extension, they learned about the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright, including his famous home, Fallingwater. We partnered with the gifted programs at McGuffey and Chartiers-Houston and planned a trip to Fallingwater along with a hands-on workshop. The trip was graciously funded through a grant! The students enjoyed learning about the history of the Kaufman family, for whom Fallingwater was built, along with the innovative mind of Frank Lloyd Wright. After the tour, students participated in a hands-on worksop focusing on the geometric principles that Frank Lloyd Wright applied to his designs. Several middle school gifted students along with their parents and siblings volunteered to help pick up litter at Mingo Creek Park on Saturday, April 6th. The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation hosted the clean-up event as part of the Great PA Clean Up. This service-learning opportunity helped the middle school students to fulfill their last requirement for the Fairchild Challenge. The Fairchild Challenge is a series of enriching science projects that students complete during the school year. The 2nd and 3rd grade gifted students traveled to Alison Park Elementary School, part of the Chartiers-Houston School District, for a Math24 competition. At this level, all students use the primer level cards and the 3rd graders also use the one-dot single digit cards. Our students enjoyed being part of this challenging math event! |
