The State Competition for the STEM Design Challenge was held on May 17th at Harrisburg University. Milena, Rebekah, Lexie, and Allison were excited to present their project, "Percy the Paddleboat," at the state level. The team of girls came in 1st place at our regional competition in March which qualified them to advance to the state competition. Special thanks to Amy Davis, Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Harrisburg University for making this enriching event possible! The 4th and 5th grade gifted students competed against other students using their knowledge of 5 books: The Crossover, The Mysterious Benedict Society, The Wright 3, Ungifted and Super Gifted. Students earned points at trivia stations, a break out box station, character identification, and a pictionary-like game. Thanks to Washington Park Elementary School for hosting! North Strabane Intermediate School hosted this year's 4th and 5th-Grades Quiz Bowl. 14 teams from North Strabane, Cecil, Trinity, Burgettstown, McGuffey and Fort Cherry competed in a double-elimination tournament. Categories included: famous people, geography, science, math, literature, animals, pop culture, games, history and spelling. North Strabane came in 3rd place, Cecil placed 2nd, and one of our Trinity teams was undefeated and won the competition! Congratulations to all participants! The middle school gifted students traveled to Burgettstown Junior & Senior High School for the annual Literature Festival on May 8th. Students read and analyzed five novels during the course of the school year before participating in this culminating event. Students from Avella, Burgettstown, Canon-Mac, Fort Cherry, McGuffey, Trinity, & Washington worked in teams to earn points at five different stations:
Congratulations to the following students for earning awards for the Art & Writing Creativity Contest: Emma, Eden, Seavaun, Rebekah, Alex, Ava, Rogan, and Sienna! Congratulations to Eden, Matthew, Sophie, and Rebekah for coming in 3rd place! Congratulations to Riley, Rogan, & Blake for coming in 2nd place! The 2019 Children's Choice Awards were held at Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh on May 6th. Several voracious readers in 4th and 5th grade eagerly devoured the eight novels in preparation for this event. The students listened to an inspiring keynote address from author, Jonathan Auxier before participating in four stations: Book Signing/Scavenger Hunt, PBS Kids, Illustrator Joe Wos, and Battle of the Books. The students were delighted that Jonathan Auxier's book, Sweep, was voted as the Children's Choice this year! We were very excited to host this year's SeaPerch event at Trinity Middle School! Teams from Burgettstown, Canon-Mac, Fort Cherry, and Trinity competed in 4 categories: Search and Rescue, Finesse Test, Obstacle Course and Redesign. Students built the SeaPerch rovers from kits. They had to use their problem-solving and teamwork skills to measure, cut, drill, solder, assemble, and preserve until their rovers were complete! They also learned about buoyancy, density, and engineering principles throughout the project. It was very exciting to see their hard work pay off at the SeaPerch event this year! |
